One very obvious correlation not brought out in the story is the fact that a lot of Portland, OR registrants move across the border to Cowlitz County, which skews the numbers.
“Sheriff Nelson said registered sex offenders may struggle to follow sex offender registration laws, but the county sees very few commit another sex crime.”
I sure as hell hope that Sheriff doesn’t believe that the registry holds sex offenders “responsible” and subsequently serves as a deterrent from re-offending because that’s a pervasive myth repeated by law enforcement and and the media.
